GREER

Afew days later, we’re sitting in the living room about to watch a movie when Dane’s phone rings. A strange sensation skates down my spine and the hairs on my arms rise. I tip my head as he grabs the device and greets Mason with a cheery hello. The faintest of touches tickles over the back of my neck, and I glare at Bastian but he merely gives me a concerned look. That’s weird.

“Uh, sure. Yeah, she’s here. Greer,” Dane says. “It’s for you.”

I turn and blink, hating the sudden unease twisting my insides. Why does Mason want to talk to me? Dane offers me the phone and I take it, my own hand moving without my permission. I hold Dane’s gaze and lift the phone to my ear.

“Hello?” Why do I sound so scared?

“It’s Lucy,” the tiny human with the sight says by way of greeting.

“Oh.” I furrow my brow. “Hello.”

She doesn’t respond. I’m even more confused. Why is Lucy calling me? A sudden strong wrongness slithers through my veins. I gasp in surprise and Dane’s eyes narrow in response.

“It’s happening,” she whispers as if surprised.

“Lucy? What’s happening? Why did you call?” My pulse jumps in my throat, and I scoot to the edge of the couch.

Valen walks in with two giant bowls filled with popcorn, his grip tight enough to turn his knuckles white. He places them on the table and drops into a squat in front of me. I place the phone on speaker, still waiting for Lucy to respond. Is her call making me feel this way, or is she calling because I feel this way?

Through the speaker, we can hear Mason murmuring to Lucy who sucks in a sharp breath. “Greer. Something bad is going to happen with the nightmares and you’re the only ones who can stop it.”

I chew on my cheek. I’m half tempted to take her words at surface level. She was there when the nightmares attacked the pack. She watched me and Valen get rid of the nightmares. If she were any other child, her words could be seen as a traumatic response. Or maybe some sort of false hope that I’ll always be there to stop the bad things in her life. She’s not any other child though. She has the sight. Lucy, much like Tisha, knows far more than any of us do.

“When?” I glance down at the phone, watching the seconds tick by.

“You feel it too, don’t you?” she asks quietly. “It’s already begun.”

What the hell does that mean? I can’t exactly ask her that, she’s too young. Instead, I say, “Where, Lucy? Tell me where.”

“There are so many of them, Greer.” She releases a tiny sound, a small whimper of fright. Whatever she’s seeing, or whatever she saw, it must be bad.

“So many of who?” I ask even though I know the answer. Still, with the sight, it’s important to be sure.

“Humans.”

“Humans?” I meet Valen’s gaze. “There are so many humans?”

“And nightmares. They’re feeding.”

My stomach drops, and for a moment, I struggle to breathe.
